Stenton Museum Bird Outing
Join In Color Birding and our partners at Stenton Museum on Saturday, September 12th from 8am to 10am as we explore the tucked away gardens surrounding the historic Stenton House and Museum. This space represents not only significant history of enslaved and emancipated members of the Philadelphia community, but it also is a refuge for many bird species in the region. It represent an oasis for many birds among the bustling communities of North Philadelphia.
The space at Stenton will not require you to put on your long distance shoes. You could spend the time meandering around the property or sitting on one of the many chairs about to enjoy the birds coming to you. This truly is a comprehensive experience of the space and it’s history. You will not be rushed but can observe the birds as they zip and scurry through the property tending to thier own life and survival.
We can expect to see a number of finches and sparrow species moving thier way through the brush. Most noteably we’ve had very reliable and singing Eastern Towhees many years. We can also expect to see a number of songbirds making thier way through as well as raptor migration above North Philadelphia
This space includes a limited number of parking spots and there are not any designated as accessible. However, we can reserve space for accessible vehicles at your request. The entry to the house/space is an historic brick walkways with many dips and bumps. Care should be taken whether walking or using a mobility device to enter. There are restrooms but they are not rated for ADA accessibility. Most of the pathways are either dirt, very fine gravel, or large rock gravel (driveway). Mobility devices are welcome and we can ensure the event and our experience are adjusted to fit. Binoculars will be available for use thanks to Nocs Provisions
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the weather. Since we will not be moving far, there is no need for a specific type of shoe other than one that you feel balances and safe in. Since we are not moving far, we should not expect to build high heart rates or sweat much. Bug spray and sun screen are always welcome should you choose. Be sure to bring water and snacks if you need.
