Fall Little Sit - Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education
Join Philly Queer Birders, In Color Birding Club, Feminist Bird Club Philly, Philadelphia Center for Adaptive Sports, Bird Philly and Disability Pride Pennsylvania for a stationary birding event, the Little Sit, at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education Park on Saturday, October 24th 9:00am-12:00pm! This will be a morning of intentionally accessible birding and we encourage people with all skill levels to attend (even if you have never been birding!) If you have an accessibility question, request, or need, please include it below and we will do our best to accommodate.
The Little Sit is our answer to a typically day-long, stationary birding event called a “big sit,” where groups try to see as many birds in one location as possible. For our event, folks are welcome to show up at any time between 9:00am-12:00pm and stay for as long or as short as they want. We’ll have snacks and refreshments and encourage people to bring chairs, picnic blankets, or anything that will make you comfortable for a morning stationary birding. We’ll have name tags so you can easily meet other birding friends!
Accessibility info:
– Accessible rest rooms (open at 9am)
– Water, snacks, and amenities will be provided
– We plan to host the Sit near the visitor center in the relatively flat grassy area, approximately 100 ft from the crushed gravel parking lot.
– Large parking lot with designated accessible spaces. These designated spots are positioned to provide the most direct, step-free access to the main entrance of the Visitor Center.— we can reserve extra accessible spots with parking cones, please indicate in registration if you require accessible parking.
– Multiple benches along the path
– The sit will last 3 hours, though birders can show up and leave at their leisure.
We do not currently have a cap on attendees as we want to welcome as many birders as possible, but we do appreciate registration for planning and communication purposes.
In Color Birding can offer reimbursement for ride shares for those who require it in order to attend the event. This is open to ALL attendees. Please indicate in the registration form below.
Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education Park is located at 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128 and can be accessed by the closest public bus stop at Ridge Ave & Port Royal Ave (typically served by SEPTA Route 9). If you are taking the bus and would like a shuttle to the visitor center and back to the bus stop please indicate so in the RSVP accessibility section of teh form.
Many extra binoculars will be available for those who need it and we will have scopes to view birds farther away! We can expect to see some fall migrants making their way through the city.
